Lake Ledro is well-known for its spectacular nature and outdoor activities, but it’s also rich in history and archaeology. On the shores of Molina di Ledro lies one of Europe’s most impressive pile-dwelling sites, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
The Pile Dwellings of Lake Ledro: A Journey Through Time
A UNESCO World Heritage Site telling the story of prehistoric life on the lakeshore
A 4,000-year-old village
Lake Ledro’s pile dwellings date back to the Bronze Age (around 2200–1350 BC). Here, on the lake edge, stood an entire village built on wooden stilts, with houses raised above the water to protect residents from animals and flooding. Thanks to archaeological excavations, the original remains are still visible today, alongside life-size reconstructions that help us to image what daily life was like for people who lived here thousands of years ago.
Pile Dwelling Museum
If you’d like to dive deeper into this fascinating history, why not visit Ledro’s Pile Dwelling Museum, where you can admire original artefacts such as tools, ceramics, weapons and jewellery? The museum is designed for adults and children, offering educational activities, workshops and live re-enactments that turn history into an interactive experience.
An Experience to Remember
Walking among the reconstructed pile dwellings, looking out over the lake and imagining the life of a prehistoric village is an experience that captivates visitors of all ages. It’s a unique opportunity to combine nature, culture and adventure during your holiday.
